Audio Extractor

A video file carries a complete audio track inside it. Take that track out as it is, or trim a part on the timeline and save that instead.

Format

The original track is copied out as-is, with no length limit. MP3 is made on your device by re-encoding, so MP3 is capped at 30 minutes.

Drag the orange cut lines, drag across the waveform to select a part, or type the times. Zoom in to place a cut to a tenth of a second. Nothing is cut until you extract.

Good to know

No length limit on whole tracks: a two-hour video is fine, because the track is copied out, not re-encoded.

MP3 is capped at 30 minutes: longer requests are refused with the reason on screen, never a silent failure.

The format follows your file: MP4 and MOV give .m4a, WebM gives Opus. A trimmed part is always MP3.

How it works

The audio is copied, not converted

A video file is a container holding separate video and audio tracks. This tool opens the container, finds the audio track, and writes it out as its own file. The audio data is copied exactly as it is stored, so the sound keeps its original quality. Only when you pick MP3, or trim a part, is anything re-encoded, and that happens on your device too.

Output guide

Which output should you pick?

MP3 encoding uses lamejs, a JavaScript port of the LAME encoder (LGPL), loaded only when you pick MP3.

Questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The audio is separated inside your browser, on your device. The counter on this page stays at Uploaded: 0 because nothing leaves the device. You can prove it: load this page, turn off your connection, and extract anyway.

Can I get an MP3 instead of the original audio?

Yes. Pick MP3 in the Extract panel and the audio is converted on your device at 192 kbps, for the whole track or just the part you selected on the timeline, up to 30 minutes. Longer tracks can still be extracted in their original format.

Why is the whole track an .m4a but a trimmed part an MP3?

The whole track is copied out exactly as it is stored, which for MP4 and MOV videos is AAC audio in an .m4a file. A trimmed part has to be re-encoded to cut it at the exact times you picked, and MP3 plays everywhere.

How precise is the trimming?

Zoom in on the timeline until the ruler shows tenths of a second, drag the orange cut lines, nudge them with the arrow keys in steps of 0.1 seconds, or type the start and end times directly. MP3 parts are cut to the times you set.

What if the video has no audio, or several audio tracks?

If there is no audio track, the tool says so plainly and there is nothing to extract. If there are several, the Your video panel lets you pick which one to take; phone videos and screen recordings almost always have just one.

Which videos work?

MP4, MOV and WebM videos work in every modern browser, and most MKV files work too. The MP3 conversion needs your browser to be able to play the file; when it cannot, the tool says so and the original track can still be extracted.
