Face Blur

Hide faces before you share a photo. Faces are found on your device and blurred by default; tap any face to keep it clear instead. Check every face before you share: detection is good, not perfect.

Effect

Detectors hug the face; ears, chin and hairline are identity too, so areas are padded by default. Pixelation is the anonymisation that survives resizing and reposting best; solid blocks hide the most.

Face finding

Strictness re-runs the finder on the photo already loaded. Boxes you moved or added yourself are kept.

Or just drag on an empty part of the photo. Areas work for plates, screens and badges too.

How it works

Found on your device, hidden by you

When you add a photo, a small face-detection model that runs in your browser marks every face it finds. Each marked face will be hidden by default; tapping a face marks it to stay clear instead, shown with a green outline, and tapping again hides it. The readout always states the split, so you can see at a glance how many faces will be hidden and how many kept clear. The effect (pixelate, blur or solid) is drawn from the photo's original pixels at full resolution when you download, and the downloaded file is re-encoded, which strips the location and camera data the original may carry. Faces you keep clear are still counted in the readout, because "covered" should mean you made a decision about every face, not that the tool lost track of one.

Questions

Does it find every face?

No detector finds every face. Side profiles, tiny faces and faces partly hidden can be missed. That is why every box here can be moved, resized and deleted, why you can drag a new box over anything the detector missed, and why the page keeps telling you to zoom in and check every face before you share. Treat the automatic boxes as a head start, not a guarantee.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. A privacy tool that uploads your photo would be asking a lot of trust. Face detection runs on your device using a small model (about 13 MB with its shared runtime) that downloads to your browser once. Turn off your internet after the page loads and the tool still works; your photo never leaves the device.

Does the download remove location data?

Yes. The download is re-encoded from the photo's pixels, so EXIF and GPS data (where the photo was taken, camera details) are not carried into it. Your original file is untouched and still has its data; only the copy you download here is clean. The Photo Privacy Checker shows you exactly what an original photo reveals.

Can the blur be removed later?

Not from the downloaded file: pixelation, blur and solid blocks here are baked into the pixels you download. Keep your original file somewhere private if you want the unblurred version. Solid blocks hide the most; heavy pixelation survives resizing and reposting better than a light blur.

Can I blur number plates or text instead of faces?

Yes. Drag on any empty part of the photo to draw a blur area over a plate, a screen, a name badge or anything else. The solid effect in black is the safest choice for plates and text, where a light blur can still leak shapes.
