How it works
Your device does the talking
Reading uses the speech engine built into your browser and device, so there is no audio file to download and no server involved. The text is split into sentences before speaking, because browsers can cut off very long single utterances mid-way. The spoken word is highlighted as it is read, and the speed you pick applies from the next sentence onward.
Voices depend on your device and browser: a desktop browser usually offers several, a phone fewer. Texts over about 20,000 characters still read, but the word highlight is switched off to keep the page fast.
Guide
Ways to use it
- Proofread by ear: hearing your own writing catches missing words and repeated phrases that eyes skip over.
- Long articles: paste an article and listen while doing something else. Pause and Stop keep control with you.
- Plain text reads best: markdown symbols and code get read aloud literally, so strip them first for a clean listen.
- Speed: 1x is normal speech. 1.25x suits skimming a familiar text. Above 1.5x, fast listeners only.
Questions
Does it work offline?
It depends on the voice. Voices built into your device work offline. Some browser voices are remote and need a connection, so if you are offline, pick a local voice.
Is my text sent anywhere?
With an on-device voice, no: speech runs locally. If you pick a remote voice, your browser may send the text to its voice service. To keep everything on the device, pick a local voice.
Does it work on phones?
Yes, where the browser supports speech. Most mobile browsers do, but the voices on offer vary by phone and browser.
Can I save the spoken audio?
No. This tool reads aloud only. It does not record or download the audio.
