PDF Compressor
Make a PDF smaller without uploading it. Two modes, labelled plainly: one keeps your text selectable and saves a little, the other makes the smallest file by turning each page into a picture.

PDF files only. One file at a time: adding another replaces the one in the list.
Mode
This mode re-saves the PDF with tidier internal storage (object streams) using pdf-lib. Nothing is redrawn, so text stays selectable and links keep working. Savings are usually modest, and a tidy file may not shrink at all. You will be told if that happens.
The tool lowers picture quality first, then page resolution, until the file fits the target or it cannot go any smaller.

How it works
Your browser does the work
Keep selectable text mode loads your PDF with pdf-lib, an open-source library stored on this site, and saves it again with object streams turned on. Smallest size mode renders each page with pdf.js, saves the page as a JPEG at the quality you picked, and builds a new PDF from those pictures with pdf-lib. Both libraries load only after you add a file, so this page itself stays light. There is no server involved at any step.
Guide
Which mode should you use?
- Documents people need to read, search or copy from: use Keep selectable text. Expect a small saving, not a dramatic one.
- Scans and photo-heavy PDFs: use Smallest size. A scanned page is already a picture, so little is lost and the saving can be large.
- Upload portals with a size cap (exam, job and government forms often ask for under 200 KB or under 2 MB): use Smallest size with a target, then open the result and check the pages are still readable before you submit it.
- A small, text-only PDF: it may already be as small as it reasonably gets. If this tool says so, believe it and keep the original.
Questions
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression happens in your browser, on your device. There is no server receiving your documents, which you can verify by loading this page, going offline, and compressing anyway.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on what is inside it. Scanned pages and PDFs full of large photos shrink the most. A text-heavy PDF may barely shrink at all, because plain text takes very little space to begin with. This page shows the size before and after for every file, and if a file cannot be made smaller it tells you so instead of handing back a bigger file.
What is the difference between the two modes?
Keep selectable text re-saves the PDF with tidier internal storage. Text, links and page content stay as they are, and savings are usually modest. Smallest size redraws every page as a JPEG picture and builds a new PDF from those pictures, which can be far smaller, but the pages become images.
What do I lose in Smallest size mode?
Text in the output cannot be selected, searched or copied, because each page is a picture. Links, fillable form fields and bookmarks are also lost. Use Keep selectable text mode if any of that matters, and keep your original file either way.
Can this match the compression offered by large upload services?
No, and we will not claim it can. Server tools use heavyweight engines that recompress the images inside a PDF while keeping its text layer, and a browser tool cannot do that job as well. This tool is the private, no-upload option, and its results vary more from file to file.
Can it hit a size limit for an upload portal?
In Smallest size mode you can set a target, such as under 200 KB or under 2 MB, and the tool lowers picture quality and then page resolution until the file fits, or it tells you the target was not reachable and gives you the smallest version it could make. Reaching a small target lowers picture quality, so check the result before you submit it.
Can it open a password-protected PDF?
No. A protected PDF cannot be read without its password. To use one here, open it in your browser with the password, then use Print and Save as PDF to make an unprotected copy, and add that copy instead.
Is there a page or file size limit?
There is no sign-up and no daily limit. Keep selectable text mode has no page cap here. Smallest size mode renders pages in your browser memory, so it stops at 100 pages, and very large files can be slow on an older phone.
