How it works

Your browser does the work

Most browsers cannot open HEIC files on their own, so when you add the first photo this page loads a decoder called libheif (open source, LGPL-3.0, source on GitHub), wrapped by heic-to. The decoder runs in a background worker on your device. Safari can read HEIC by itself, so on Apple devices the decoder may not be needed at all. The tool reads the photo's rotation note, turns the picture upright, and saves it as JPG or PNG. There is no server involved at any step.

Questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Converting happens in your browser, on your device. There is no server receiving your photos, which you can verify by loading this page, going offline, and converting anyway.

Why does the first conversion take longer than the rest?

The first time you add a HEIC photo, your browser loads a decoder (libheif, about 780 KB compressed) from this site and starts it in a background worker. That happens once per visit. Later photos in the same visit skip that step.

Will my photos come out the right way up?

Yes. Phone photos store a rotation note in their data, and this tool reads it and turns the picture upright as it converts. If you keep metadata in a JPG, the note is rewritten as normal, so the photo is not rotated a second time by other apps.

What is the difference between Strip and Keep metadata?

Strip removes the hidden data a photo carries, such as camera details, the date taken and, if present, GPS location. Keep copies that data into the converted JPG with the rotation note fixed. Keep works for JPG output only. PNG output carries no metadata in this version, whichever option you pick.

What are the limits I should know about?

A Live Photo converts as its main still image only; the short video part is not included. HDR photos lose their HDR effect, because JPG and PNG hold less brightness data. Converting uses a lot of processor power, so a large batch can take a while and feel slow on an older phone. There is no file limit set by this site.
