Source offer for this model
This model is the IMG.LY background-removal library and its ISNet model data, used here under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (AGPL-3.0). That licence gives you the right to the source code, and this is the offer of it:
- Library source: github.com/imgly/background-removal-js
- Model data source: the @imgly/background-removal-data package
- Licence: Read the licence (AGPL-3.0, served on this site)
- This page's own code is delivered to your browser as readable files, starting with the page's main script.
Downloaded models
Model files live in your browser's HTTP cache for this site. They are not installed on your device. This page cannot delete the browser's HTTP cache itself, so Remove clears this page's record of a model and makes the page ask again before the next download with it. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes the files completely, and your browser can delete cached files on its own when storage runs low.
Download
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG flattens onto the picked background, or white if it is transparent.

Background in the result
Sliders and the colour well update the result at once, with no new model run. Picking a preset above switches back to that preset.
Changing the background colour does not run the removal again. It only changes what sits behind the cut-out subject.
How it works
The model comes to your photo
Most background removers send your photo to their server. This one does the opposite: you pick one of four removal models, it downloads to your browser once and stays in the browser cache for this site, and your photo never leaves your device. Light, Portrait and Best quality share one runtime, so only the first of them pays for it. Hair detail brings its own runtime. While a model stays in the cache, you can load this page, go offline, and remove backgrounds anyway.
Guide
Getting a clean cut-out
- Contrast helps most: a subject that stands out from the wall or ground behind it cuts out far more cleanly than one that blends in.
- Start with Light: if the edges look good, you never need a bigger download. Move up only when hair or fur edges look rough.
- People: Portrait keeps hair on people well. Products and pets: use Best quality. Portrait is tuned for people and kept the ground under our test cat.
- Product photos: use the white or light grey background option for marketplace listings instead of transparent.
- Any background colour: the Background tile has a custom picker with red, green and blue sliders plus a colour well. The result updates as you drag, and the download uses the same colour.
- Big camera photos take longer: the bigger models work through the full picture. Give it time rather than tapping twice.
Questions
Which model should I pick?
Start with Light: it is the smallest download and handles clear subjects well. Pick Portrait for photos of people when hair matters. Pick Best quality for pets, products and anything that is not a person; in our tests it was the strongest all-rounder. Pick Hair detail when flyaway strands are the whole point and you accept its bigger, separate download. Every model runs on your device, so trying another one costs nothing but its download.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is processed in your browser and never sent to a server. The only downloads are the model files coming down to your device.
Why does the first use need a download, and how big is it?
Each removal model is a file your browser downloads once and keeps in its cache. Light is 4.6 MB, Portrait is 25.9 MB and Best quality is 54.1 MB. The first of those three you download also brings a shared 12.7 MB runtime, so a first-ever Light download is 17.3 MB; after that, each of the three costs only its own size. Hair detail uses its own runtime and always downloads 56.8 MB. Nothing is installed on your device.
Where are the models stored, and how do I delete them?
In your browser's cache for this site. The Downloaded models section on this page shows what this page has recorded and lets you clear that record, which makes the page ask again before the next download. Page code cannot delete the browser's HTTP cache itself; clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes the files completely, and your browser may also drop them on its own when storage runs low.
Why do the models show their source and licence?
Each model is someone else's published work, and the licence is part of the deal when it is used. Open licences ask for attribution, and the Hair detail model's AGPL licence also gives you a right to its source code, so its source offer sits in its panel above. Showing the source lets you check where a model came from before you download it.
Why do hair and fur edges look rough?
The models see your photo at a small working size: 320 pixels for Light, about 512 for Portrait and Best quality, and 1024 for Hair detail. Fine strands near that grid size can round off or vanish, and edges that blend into the background are the first to go. A plain, contrasting background behind the subject gives the cleanest result.
What happens if a model fails on my device?
The page says so and offers a one-click switch to Light, the smallest model. Large models can run out of memory on older phones; Light is the safest pick there. Nothing is uploaded when a model fails.
Can I change the download format or size?
Yes. The Download tile saves PNG, JPG or WebP, at the original size or scaled to 75%, 50% or 25%. PNG and WebP keep the transparent background. JPG has no transparency, so it flattens the cut-out onto the background you picked in the Background tile, or onto white when that background is transparent. A quality slider appears for JPG and WebP and starts at 90.
